The Village of New Concord will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, April 25, by continuing its long tradition of planting a tree with the assistance of the second-graders of New Concord Elementary School. This year’s event takes place at 10:00 AM in front of 52 West High Street.
National Arbor Day is celebrated annually on the last Friday in April. 2025 commemorates more than 150 years of the tree planter’s holiday, which was established in 1872 in Nebraska because of the efforts of journalist-editor-tree-lover J. Sterling Morton, who eventually became secretary of the Nebraska Territory. It is estimated that more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on that very first Arbor Day.
New Concord works closely with the state foresters of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for guidance in selecting and maintaining of its beloved trees and is proud to be one of the oldest Tree City USA communities in Ohio, now at 44 years. This program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
