SUMMARY:"Godspeed\, John Glenn" Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Muskingum University Department of Music will present Godspeed\, John Glenn\, a special concert commemorating the life and legacy of one of the university’s most distinguished alumni\, on Sunday\, April 19 at 3:00 p.m. in Brown Chapel. The performance is free and open to the public\, and a reception will follow the concert. \nThe concert will feature the Muskingum Wind Ensemble and the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds\, conducted by Dr. David Turrill\, Associate Professor of Music. The program marks the 10th anniversary of John Glenn’s passing and celebrates his extraordinary journey from New Concord\, Ohio\, to national and global prominence as an astronaut\, military officer\, and public servant. \nAt the center of the program is Godspeed\, John Glenn\, a work by Lieutenant Colonel Ryan Nowlin\, Director of The President’s Own United States Marine Band. Commissioned by Muskingum University and premiered in 2018\, the composition offers a sweeping musical portrait of Glenn’s life\, drawing on his memoir and key moments of his personal and professional journey. \nIn addition to Nowlin’s work\, the program will feature selections by composers Robert Jager\, Frank Ticheli\, Adrian B. Sims\, Philip Sparke\, and John Philip Sousa\, reflecting themes of patriotism\, leadership\, and service. \nThe concert will also highlight collaboration within the Muskingum music community\, featuring student conductor Keeley Carter and guest conductor Eric Shields\, a member of the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds and a U.S. military veteran. A narrated reading from John Glenn’s memoir will provide additional insight into his deep connection to family\, community\, and his Muskingum roots. \nJohn Glenn’s relationship with Muskingum extended far beyond his student years. He served as a university trustee for nearly 50 years and remained a strong advocate for education and public service throughout his life. Through music and reflection\, Godspeed\, John Glenn invites audiences to celebrate a legacy that began in southeastern Ohio and reached far beyond—into space and into history. \nThe Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds and “Godspeed\, John Glenn” are made possible in part by an investment of public funds from the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally\, educationally\, and economically. \nFor more information\, contact David Turrill at dturrill@muskingum.edu.
